The Art of The Wisteria:
Instructor: Pete Churgell
This class will cover the biology and differences of the Asian and American Wisterias. We will then cover how to selet the ones best for your needs and how to grow and train them to different styles. We will then learn to prune and maintain them, including some common problem solving. Slides and demonstration materials.

Container Trees Japanese Style:
Instructor: John Boyce
A lecture and demonstration. Hands-on pruning guidance - bring a plant and shears. John Boyce has been in Bonsai since 1960. He helped found the Bonsai Society of San Francisco. He has studied with various teachers from California and Japan. John has taught Bonsai Basics for 20 years. John currently studies with Kathy Shaner, Curator of the Golden State Bonsai Collection-North, in Lakeside Park, Oakland. John as a B.S. in Floraculture from the University of Ill. He is also a professor third class degree in the school of Ikenobo Ikebana and teaches at the Japan Culture Center in San Francisco.

Nature and Arboriculture; the Science Behind the Aesthetics:
Instructor: Walter Fuji
A lecture, demonstration, and tour of the Hakone Gardens focused on western arboriculture's insights into trees in nature, aesthetic pruning, and Japanese garden trees. Learn the relationship of tree structure, physiology and life cycles to training trees, pruning methods, pests and diseases. Basics of tool use and safety in trees explained. Walt Fujii is an ASCA registered consulting arborist #402, ISA certified arborist #WE2257A, WC/ISA certified tree worker #623. Former head arborist for the city of Menlo Park, Walt now works as a consulting arborist for tree diagnosis, appraisal and management, as well as high definiton tree pruning for focal point trees.

Japanese Maples - Pruning, Care, and Culture:
Instructor: Walter Fuji
How to prune Japanese Maples, when to prune, how to grow and maintain them. Also, what to look for when buying a Maple and the main pest and diseases that affect Maples. Randall Lee is an aesthetic pruner of ornamental trees and shrubs with over 15 years of experience. He specializes in Japanese black pines, Japanese maples and Japanese garden pruning. His service also includes bonsai repotting and pruning and bonsai workshops. Randall is presently a member of two bonsai clubs, President of the Merritt College Bonsai Club and a trustee for the Golden State Bonsai Federation. Randall also does pruning at ppublic parks, community gardens and Japanese gardens open to the public, including Hakone Gardens. Randall will demonstrate using branches and trees in containers.

Rock Placement Workshop Using Table-top Tray Models:
Instructor: Tim Hansken
Good stone setting techniques are one of the hardest skills to acquire. This full day workshop allows you to learn the basics of Japanese garden layout under the guidance of an expert: streamside, pond and retainer wall edgings, waterfall and cascade construction. You will create several gardens under the watchful eye of the instructor. We’ll discuss details of Japanese garden construction and layout useful for any style of garden.
